Hammock Day; July 22nd, 2010

Summer, for most of us is totally here, although the official 1st day of summer is not until June 21st. This is most definitely the time to begin our slow-down and relax mode. During the summer months we have what is normally referred to as the “Dog Days” of Summer.. Dog Days is the name applied for the most sultry (very hot and sometimes humid) period of the summer which is most accepted during July 3 to August 11.

Sky Watchers, in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea (in early times) named this time period after the conjunction (joining or coming together) of  Sirius, the Dog Star, and our very own Sun. The Sky Watchers reckoned that this time period consisted of 20 days before and 20 days after the conjunction. In the latitude of the Mediterranean region this time period completely coincided with the regional hottest of days which of course brought disease and much discomfort. The time of conjunction for the Dog Star and Sun varies by the difference of latitude and because of this the Dog Days of Summer gradually; very gradually, changes over time. Hammock Day is accepted to be celebrated and enjoyed perzactly in the middle of the Dog Days of Summer!

Hammock Day is on July 22. Hammock Day is a big event and should be participated by all people especially those who have a hammock(s). Hammock Day is celebrated exactly the way the name implies; in your hammock for the day. Getting out from your hammock to get food, a beverage OR to do ‘your natural thing’ (bathroom visit) are accepted. Specifications of hardware for the day is of course hammocks; of course one may enjoy the day in swing chairs, air chairs, hammock chairs, butterfly chairs or park benches for those taking walks in a local park. These provisions have been specified in the Hammock Constitution.(these specs would have been written down for all to view from the Hammock International Constitution, if there really was a Hammock International Constitution).  Yard work and house work, both, are strictly frowned upon during Hammock Day.

This is only one day. No vacuuming, dusting, laundry, lawn cutting, weed pulling nor watering is permitted. This day is to be enjoyed by the entire family, perhaps we should get Congress to officially do a name change to “Family Hammock Day”. Perhaps a friendly family competition or contest, Who Is Doing Hammock Day Best! Remember to Relax, Relax, Relax!  Nat King Cole said it best when in 1963 he sang a song to the Top Ten,  we at HammockOasis believe is the Hammock Song. Nat King Cole did not know this was the Hammock Song nor was it called the Hammock Song BUT it should have. “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer”. We at HammockOasis.Com also believe that the whole-truth and nothing-but-the-kinda-sorta truth of the matter is; just maybe, that the original real title of that song was “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy-Dog-Days-of Summer!”. We further believe that Capital Records felt it was too long of a title and the grey-suits said, Make The Title Shorter, so ‘Dog’ was removed. Poor Sirius!; such a good dog.. This paragraph is a lesson in ho, ho; smiles, laughter and clean fun. 

WHO INVENTED HAMMOCK DAY ?? WHEN DID HAMMOCK DAY BEGIN ?? WHERE WAS HAMMOCK DAY FIRST CELEBRATED ?? The answer to those questions and many, many more is “ Do Not Really Know ! That is the short explanation of the long, but does it really matter!; of course not just so long as the day is full of relaxation, enjoyment, laughter and good quality and quantity “Family Time”.
